Markup and margin calculator

What this calculator does not do

  • It does not suggest a markup or a margin, and the percentage fields have no quick-fill buttons for that reason — every other rate field on this site does. A tax rate is imposed on you and this is not: what you can charge depends on your work, your market and your clients, none of which this page knows anything about.
  • It does not know what belongs in the cost. Materials and subcontractors are obvious; your own hours, software and the time you spend not billing are the ones people leave out, and leaving them out is what turns a healthy-looking margin into a year that does not add up.
  • It does not keep anything. Nothing is written to your browser's storage while you use it and nothing is sent to us, so the figures are gone when you close the tab. Press Create this invoice if you need a document: the price is handed to the invoice generator in this tab, cleared as soon as it opens, and saved there as a new invoice alongside any you already have.
