Sales tax calculator

Add sales tax to an amount, or take it back out of a total that already includes it. Enter each jurisdiction as its own row and the tax is split across them the way a return asks for it.

What you are working out
The amount

The figure you are charging before any tax is added.

Used only if you press Create this invoice, as the name of the line it becomes.

Tax rates

One row per jurisdiction. Add rows for the county, the city or a special district where they apply, and the combined rate is the sum. One row with the combined rate already in it works out to the same total.

What this calculator does not do

  • It does not know your rates, and there is no jurisdiction lookup here on purpose. Rates depend on where the sale is sourced, what was sold and who bought it, and a lookup on this page would be tax advice that goes stale without warning.
  • It does not decide whether what you sold is taxable, whether you have nexus in a state, or whether your customer holds an exemption certificate. Those are questions for your tax authority or your accountant.
  • It does not keep anything. Nothing is written to your browser's storage while you use it and nothing is sent to us, so the figures are gone when you close the tab. Press Create this invoice if you need a document: the figures are handed to the invoice generator in this tab, cleared as soon as it opens, and saved there as a new invoice alongside any you already have.
  • It sends the combined rate to the invoice, not the rows. An invoice carries one tax rate, so the breakdown stays on this page.

For a tax quoted inclusive of the price, the VAT calculator does the same two sums with the conventions that go with VAT. For a whole invoice rather than one amount, the invoice calculator takes line items, a discount and a deposit.
