Withholding tax calculator

Some clients pay your invoice less a tax they keep back and pay over for you. This works out what arrives and, the direction most people need, what to invoice so the figure you need is the figure you get.

What you're working out

Your fee, before any sales tax or VAT is added and before anything is withheld.

The rates

The percentage your client keeps back. It depends on the country, the kind of work and sometimes a tax treaty. This page does not know it and will not guess.

Only if you add one to the invoice. Leave it empty if you do not charge any.

Used only if you press Create this invoice, as the name of the line it becomes.

What the withholding tax calculator does not do

  • It does not know whether your client has to withhold, or at what rate, and there is no country list here on purpose. That depends on where each of you is, the kind of work and sometimes a tax treaty between the two countries, and a table of it on this page would be tax advice that goes out of date the day a rule changes.
  • It does not say what happens to the amount withheld afterwards, such as whether it counts towards your own tax, or can be reduced or claimed back. Those are questions for your tax authority or your accountant. Keeping the certificate or slip your client gives you is what makes any of them possible.
  • It does not keep anything. Nothing is written to your browser's storage while you use it and nothing is sent to us, so the figures are gone when you close the tab. Press Create this invoice if you need a document: the figures are handed to the invoice generator in this tab, cleared as soon as it opens, and saved there as a new invoice alongside any you already have.
